Karol Śliwka. Polish Designs Polish Designers

Date

7 July - 14 October

place:

Museum of the City of Gdynia
ul. Zawiszy Czarnego 1

During the fifth exhibition in the "Polish Designs Polish Designers" series, the Gdynia City Museum will present the achievements of Karol Śliwka (born 1932), eminent artist and graphic designer.

It will be the largest monographic exhibition devoted to this artist so far, including designs, sketches, notes, photographs, paintings and objects from designers private archives, complemented with works from museums from all over the country as well as items from private collections.

Karol Śliwka is a versatile artist. His portfolio includes packaging, book and vinyl covers, stamps and posters. However, he is mainly known for logo design, executed for such brands and organizations as the Institute of Mother and Child, PKO BP Bank, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, the National Library and the Adamed Group.

Although many of logos designed by Karol Śliwka are still in use, he often remains anonymous. At the exhibition, Śliwka will finally get a chance to speak: nostalgic yet humorous stories and anecdotes told by an artist will lead us through his career, beginning with the PRL period, through times of political transformation, up to the present day.

At the exhibition, we will talk about elements that make logo appreciated and recognizable.

We’ll reflect on what inspires graphic designer, whose work co-shaped the everyday life of several generations, and whether his work should be seen in terms of craft, or rather art. Finally, analyzing an oeuvre of an experienced designer "with principles", we will ask about the values in graphic design.
