During the lecture, the speaker will talk about how to design buildings for a special purpose, developing the smallest detail on a huge scale of projects - on the example of the implementation of Africarium in Wroclaw.

Afrykarium is the first oceanarium in Poland, at the same time the largest in Europe and the only one dedicated to Africa in the world - it has just been opened in Wroclaw. The annual number of visitors is estimated at 3 million. The principle of immersing the visitors in the natural environments of the Nile, the Red Sea, the Mozambique Channel, the coast of Namibia and the jungles of Congo is implemented inside the object, whose total capacity is 184,000m3 , housing the animals of the savannah, rainforest, lakes, rivers and oceans. Each biotope is recreated with its unique temperature and humidity reaching 90%. The entailed enormous problems in terms of the physics of building constructions, which the designers and contractors representing all branches had to solve. Every reservoir with animals requires water of unique composition; the whole object contains ca. 16 million litres of water.

Dorota Szlachcic, working in the ArC2 Fabryka Projektowa team on the architecture of Afrykarium, as well as the Oceanario de Namibe in Angola and the aquarium dedicated to Asia (under construction), will present the problems faced by designers working on such colossal undertakings and their solutions.

The lecture is part of CITY + ARCHITECTURE BLOCK. Free admission.
